It is a little-known fact, but for the past hundred years the g39 premises in Cardiff has been home for the Real Writers’ Residency Programme – and not a contemporary artspace after all! This year’s writer, Rachel Pantechnicon, will be the 100th writer in residence, and to celebrate the centenary of this benchmark in the literary world she has been charged with the task of looking back at the Residency’s history and its notable ex-residents. For the centenary celebrations, Rachel Pantechnicon will be engaging with previous writers in residence to give an impression of the Residency’s influence in the literary world. A documentary will follow Pantechnicon’s progress through her residency, with contributions by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, performance poet Paul Hamilton, John Hegley, Nathan Penlington, Jessica Voorsanger, Bedwyr Williams, Andy Black, Megan Broadmeadow, Jane Fox, Peter Finnimore. Narration is supplied by the eminent Sir Gideon Vane. Be sure to also pay a visit to the information centre and souvenir shop on the ground floor, where you can buy delightful gifts, souvenirs and memorabilia representing every writer from the Residency’s legacy. The Real Writers’ Residency Programme centenary celebrations promise to be a truly unforgettable event in the literary calendar. The celebrations open with a cabaret night at a The Model Inn, Cardiff, with entertainment provided by some of the Residency luminaries including Enid Blaeanu, Bedwyr Williams, Simon Munnery, Suzanne Andrade, Gwdihw, John Hegley, Sherlock Holmes and Rachel Pantechnican.
